Michael Kurschilgen ist seit 2022 Assistenzprofessor an der FernUni Schweiz, nachdem er zuvor an der Technischen Universität München und am Max-Planck-Institut in Bonn tätig war. Er promovierte 2013 im Rahmen einer Max-Planck-Graduiertenschule in Wirtschaftswissenschaften an der Universität Jena. Er hat Forschungsaufenthalte an der Stanford University, der UC Berkeley, der University of Michigan, dem EUI Florenz und der Universität von Bologna absolviert.
Seine Forschungsthemen liegen an der Schnittstelle zwischen Wirtschaft, Psychologie und Recht. In seiner Forschung kombiniert Prof. Dr. Kurschilgen verhaltensorientierte mikroökonomische Theorie mit Laborexperimenten, Feldexperimenten und anderen empirischen Ansätzen. Seine Arbeit zeigt, unter anderem, dass Eigentumsrechte sicherer sind, wenn Umverteilung obligatorisch (anstatt freiwillig) ist; und dass das menschliche Bedürfnis nach sozialer Anerkennung ein Hauptgrund dafür ist, warum die Bürger den Empfehlungen wissenschaftlicher Experten vertrauen können.
