The Distance Learning University Switzerland was established in 2005 by merging three regional study centres:
- The Brig Study Centre of the Distance Learning University Switzerland, Brig VS
- The Pfäffikon Study Centre of the Distance Learning University Switzerland, Pfäffikon SZ
- The French-Swiss Distance Learning Centre CRED, Sierre VS
This merger has led to a broadly-supported university offering a varied range of courses in German and French. Since 1992, the individual study centres have offered distance courses at the university level as well as continuing education. Distance Learning University Switzerland continuously develops and expands its range of courses – and accordingly the number of students is steadily growing.
In 2004, the Confederation (Rectors’ Conference of Swiss Universities CRUS) recognised Distance Learning University Switzerland as a further-learning institute of university level. Thus the diplomas of the individual study courses are recognised at Swiss federal level – the Distance Learning Bachelors and Masters are equivalent to those of traditional universities.
